Why did you want to join the Board?
I used to be a member of the Tenants Forum and liked the idea that I could play a part in the way Family is run. I found the meetings friendly and staff really listened to what residents had to say. When I saw the advert for new tenant Board Members, I wasn’t sure whether I really had anything to offer, but I phoned in, asked a few questions and this gave me the confidence to apply. I am really happy that I did, as it has been both a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
What is it like to be both a tenant and a Board member?
As a tenant you know what Family Housing Association is really like. You can really make a huge difference to the services you and other tenants receive.
How much time does it involve?
There are about 12 meetings a year, that’s around one a month that you have to attend. They usually last for about two hours between 6pm and 8pm. Occasionally, you might get a phone call or some extra correspondence in the post. Family will help you with childcare and travel costs for any meetings you attend.
What are the advantages/ disadvantages of being both a tenant and a Board member?
There are many advantages such as free training, invitations to special events and mainly the fact that you can really make a difference. You know I can’t think of any disadvantages.
What advice would you give someone who is thinking about being a Board member?
It is very easy to think that you have little to offer or joining a Board is not for you. But your experience as a tenant means that you have something special to give. My advice is to take the plunge and apply. The only regret you will have is not trying.
Do you get paid any money as a Board member?
Yes, you will receive a small monthly payment if you serve on the Board
Anything you would like to add?
I have really enjoyed my time on Family’s Board. It has been a rich and rewarding experience and I feel that my contributions have been valued. Perhaps I’ll see you at the next Board meeting!
